The existence of higher education institutions in a region is expected to be a
driving force for regional development through leading research in the region. The descriptive research that examines the advantages of palm oil as a sustainable food source, its potential in the Aceh west coast region where the founding of Teuku Umar University shows that: Aceh's west coast region has soil and climate as natural resources that are very suitable for oil palm growth; this region is the center of Aceh's palm oil production with the potential to be able to supply vegetable oil needs for all residents of Aceh Province plus half the population of North Sumatra Province; with the position of Teuku Umar University located in the Aceh palm oil production center, then according to its vision and mission the University needs to establish palm oil in its research road map, because palm oil is a leading commodity in the
region which is related to the livelihoods of the local community around the University and is able to drive regional and national economic growth.
